The industries of Kirkintilloch, iron founding, boat building and repair, timber, nickel smelting and coal, reflect its position as basically a canal generated town.
G Hutton 1993.
Water is fed into the canl at Kirkintilloch from the Johnstone, Woodend, Lochend and Bishops Lochs, in order that it may continue operating. The canal retains its original lining, which is a coating of 'puddled' clay.
The town itself developed due to the existence of the canal. As well as two shipyards, there were industries whose presence was determined by the ability to use the canal for transport. The shipyards were located to the W of Townhead Bridge (NS67SE 46), one of them (NS67SE 70) in a basin which has since been infilled.
H Brown 1997.
In 1773 the section of canal between Grangemouth and the Hillhead basin at Kirkintilloch was completed and its use for commercial traffic commenced. At this stage Kirkintilloch became Scotland's first inland port.
