Scrabster, 10th Dec. The HOPE (schr.), of Leith, got on Dunnet sands, in Thurso [Dunnet?] bay, yesterday, and it is likely to become a total wreck: crew saved.

(Classified as wooden schooner, with cargo of pavement: date of loss cited as 9 December 1867). Hope: this vessel was wrecked on Dunnet Sands, or at Burn of Garth, Castletown. Capt. Georgeson.

Registration: Leith. Built 1837. 56grt. Length: 20m. Beam: 5m.

The location cited for this loss is essentially tentative, and the alternative location cited by Whittaker remains unverified. Dunnet Sands are not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name may be taken to apply to the extensive sands that extend from ND 216 709 to ND 204 683, around the SE side of Dunnet Bay. The Burn of Garth is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but Castletown is at ND 185 679.
