This site represents a remaining section of the Cromarty to Dingwall Railway, a 400-500m length of railway cutting. It is not present on the 1st edition OS map (1880) or the 2nd (1907). It is also not present on the 1992 OS 1:10,000 map or the latest version. The partial remains of a cutting, from NH 6490 6462 to NH 6740 6480, can be seen on an aerial photograph of 1954, 1969 and 1973. The Cromarty and Dingwall Light Railway was authorised by an Act of Parliament in August 1902, and by 1914 six miles of track had been laid from Cromarty to Conon Bridge. The track was uplifted during the First World War and the construction was abandoned thereafter.
