(NJ 9552 1765) Hare Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1901).

Fragments of urns found in a large tumulus on the farm of Balmeadie, in the parish of Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, were presented to the Society of Antiquaries for Scotland by John Stuart on 14th February, 1853.

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1855.

The fragments are of an Early Bronze Age food vessel (accession no. NMS EE 54).

This grass-covered cairn situated in a small wood and on the top of a low eminence, measures 30.0m diameter and 3.6m high; its flat top with exposed stones is 3.0m in diameter. In the NW segment there is a 2.0m wide berm which may, at one time have encircled the cairn.

The remains of a grass-grown cairn are situated on a low but prominent hill 520m NE of Cairntack steading. It measures about 11.3m in diameter by 1.5m in height, and has been set on top of a natural mound. In 1961 the OS considered that the whole mound was artificial, and stated that it measured 30m in diameter by 3.6m in height, but more recent erosion makes it clear that the base of the mound is of natural origin.
