Privately built nuclear defence bunker situated at the N end of the garden at Birnie Hill House (NO24NE 112.00).

Commissioned by the owner in 1973 during the Cold War, to protect the family at a cost of £35,000, the shelter is about 4m underground and is accessed by a hatch in the garden.

The underground room measures 3m x 3m which is reached from the hatch by a sloping stairwell. In addition the bunker is supplied with electricity, a fan for fresh air powered by a bicycle and a condenser to purify water.
