NT82SW 123 from 8279 2374 to 8323 2353

Just off the summit and on the generally gentle to moderate NW and W-facing slopes of Black Hill, there is an extensive area of contour cultivation measuring up to 230m from N to S by 470m. Lying to the S of a modern field-boundary, the cultivation overlooks the head of the Elghope Burn but does not extend down over moderately steep to steep slopes to the burn. The extents of the cultivation are generally undefined except on the S where the cultivation continues round the head of the burn to join the terraces covering the N slopes of Shoulder Hill (NT82SW 152) and may form part of the same system. Typically the cultivation measures 5m in width between furrows 0.3m wide and 0.1m deep.
