On the 22nd April, 1889, Mr G Petrie, Little Wart, Burray found a hoard of Silver objects, including 10-11th century coins, in a wooden bowl, while cutting peat in the North Town Moss. The date of the deposit ws probably the earlier part of the 11th century. Now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS).

Mr J Petrie, of Little Wart, (the finder's grandson) pointed out on the ground at ND 4550 9658 the approximate find spot of this hoard, on the N margin of a bog.

The discovery of the hoard, with fragmentary armlets and Anglo-Saxon coins in the wooden "dish", was reported in 'The Orcadian', 1889.
