A watching brief was carried out by SUAT from August to September 1991 on ground work for the renewal of water services in the centre of Dunfermline in advance of a pedestrianisation scheme. Nineteen trenches in total were cut by machine, in High Street, Randolph Street, Cross Wynd, and Douglas Street. Three trenches contained archaeological deposits.

In early 1992, SUAT carried out a watching brief in advance of a pedestrianisation scheme involving High Street (NT 0897 8744 to 0927 8748), Guildhall Street (NT 0910 8746 to 0911 8737), Randolph Street (NT 0902 8746 to 0902 8752), Cross Wynd (NT 0910 8747 to 0910 8752) and Douglas Street (NT 0966 8747 to 0916 8753).
