The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are arbitrary, being derived from the unverified location of loss that is cited by Whittaker, which indicates that the vessel was lost within the Moray Firth. The loss of this vessel may alternatively have occurred within the quasi-administrative areas that are designated as Maritime - Moray or Maritime - Aberdeenshire. It also remains unclear whether this vessel stranded or foundered; the former appears the more probable.

In the apparent absence of any 'Portaferry' place-names in Scotland, the loss of this vessel may be assigned to Portaferry, Co. Down, at the entrance to Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 25 January 2011.
