Ian Lindsay and Partners designed Colinton Mains Church. The earliest drawings in the NRHE are dated 1952 and the church was was opened in 1954. The style of the church is heavily influenced by historic Caithness churches such as Reay and Canisbay, with their dominant white harled towers and simple forms. The interior fittings, especially the pulpit, show the influence of traditional late 17th century or early 18th century detailing especially here in the pulpit with its sounding board. Similar detailing is also found at the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, on which Lindsay carried out an extensive restoration. There is no stained glass to interrupt the clear light of Presbyterianism, and rather unusually the large communion table is raised high and at a considerable distance from the congregation.
There is a west gallery accessible from the tower which also contains the session house and a north organ gallery, both with elegant painted fronts. To the north is a suite of halls completed by the same architectural practice in 1970.
