In April 1996, in advance of the construction of a house extension to the west gable of 13 Old Castle cottages by Mr and Mrs Allan, an archaeological examination was undertaken of the area excavated for the extension, by Dr Hilary Murray, due to the proximity of Slains Castle. Three features were revealed: a section relating to the construction of the ruined cottage; a midden on the north side of the ruined cottage; and a wall crossing the north-west corner of the extension foundation area. The wall is interpreted as having been part of the minor auxiliary buildings relating to the castle.
