A continuous programme devoted to the survey of buildings and structures threatened with destruction or significant alteration. A principal component is that relating to listed buildings, the associated work being the only statutory role of RCAHMS. A significant component of the programme focuses on non-statutory historic buildings, many of which are historically significant but have no legal protection, and are therefore much more vulnerable to change. The survey output ranges from detailed measured and photographic surveys to a rapid relatively superficial photographic survey. The programme is responsive to threats and events that occur on a day to day basis. In order to keep abreast of developments throughout Scotland, TBS staff liaise with local authorities, planners and other professionals (e.g. Conservation Officers), as well as owners, tenants, developers, architects, and other Scottish Heritage bodies (including Historic Scotland and the Scottish Civic Trust).
