Building Notes

Tiptoe House is located near the Scottish-English border and was originally a 19th century cottage. By 1948 the cottage required restoration work and the owner, Major France, commissioned the architect Basil Spence to make it much more hospitable. Over the next three years Spence provided designs for the building, adding a balcony, balustrades and a variety of surface textures to its façade.

The decorative appearance of the building is considered to be in Festival Style, similar in fashion to the 'look' of the buildings at the 1951 Festival of Britain.

Archive Details and Summary

The Sir Basil Spence Archive holds one colour perspective view of Tiptoe House. This may have been the same perspective that was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1951.

This text was written as one of the outputs of the Sir Basil Spence Archive Project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, 2005-08.
