Lochaline Village founded for dispossessed crofters in c.1830 by the merchant financier John Sinclair, the earlier settlement of Knock having stood higher up the hill. Although for many decades it was little more than a huddle of overcrowded thatched cottages, Lochaline became the principal commercial centre and pierhead for Morvern, and by the 1860s had five grocers, a wheel-wright, two joiners, three builders, three shoemakers, three tailors and a blacksmith.
