Harburn House, 1804

Pretty two-storey Regency villa facing a courtyard; pavilion roof, dentilled cornice and curiously recessed central three bays with fine fanlit doorway. Three much more florid storeys facing north-west over an ornamental lake and beautifully landscaped policies. Now conference centre and hotel (colour page). A late 19th-century summerhouse faces the front entrance. The early 19th-century stables form a plain elegant courtyard beneath the pedimented entrance. Monument, 1835, an ashlar Doric column topped by a ball finial, commemorates the visit of Charles X of France in 1832.

Taken from "West Lothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide", by Stuart Eydmann, Richard Jaques and Charles McKean, 2008. Published by the Rutland Press http://www.rias.org.uk
