West Port

Level triangular space, once principal reception area into Linlithgow from the west. The Black Bitch and the West Port Hotel are 18th-century relics gazing gloomily upon a spot whose spatial qualities are overwhelmed by roads and traffic. The Black Bitch consists of two two-storey houses, one with swept pantiles, the other heightened in the 19th century with mansard roof and dormer. The West Port Hotel occupies a row of cottages with six bargeboarded dormers and mock stonework.

Taken from "West Lothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide", by Stuart Eydmann, Richard Jaques and Charles McKean, 2008. Published by the Rutland Press http://www.rias.org.uk
