The core of Kames House dates from the seventeenth century, but alterations and additions were carried out in successive years, including work in the early twentieth century by Harry Ramsay Taylor.

The building is of two-storeys, with an attic floor. The original building was probably quite plain; later additions include circular turrets at the corners and a two-storey wing with giant order pilasters, that is, large flat columns which were built against the wall.

Kames House was the birthplace of Henry Home, Lord Kames, who lived between 1696-1782. Lord Kames was a philosopher, judge and an agricultural improver. He advocated the supply of hearty meals to tenants, at which discussions of farming methods could take place.
