Nos 17-19 Woodmarket occupy part of a three-storeyed building which was probably built in the mid-nineteenth century as a residential block. At some point in the late nineteenth century the ground floor was altered to form two shops, which have retained their original pilastraded shop fronts. The upper floors, which remain private residences, are faced with broached ashlar (dressed masonry which has a horizontal or diagonal series of lines chiselled into its surface). Other decorative features include sill-courses (projecting bands of stonework which run the length of the building at the height of each window sill) on the first and second floors.
