A misunderstanding of a medieval source led to the belief that there was an Augustinian friary situated at Roxburgh, but it is more likely that the source referred to the Franciscan friary of St Peter's which probably stood in the vicinity of the cottage known as 'The Friars'.
Orders of friars were the result of attempts to recapture what was seen as a truly apostolic way of life. The friars attempted to live on the charity of those they ministered to, and were often found in towns and cities across medieval Europe from the twelfth century onwards. In Scotland, the only definite Augustinian friary, in Berwick-Upon-Tweed, was founded in 1267, when Berwick was a Scottish burgh.
