A nineteenth century record of the collection of Kelso Museum mentions an axe-hammer found in Kelso. The axe-hammer is described as being fashioned from 'greenstone', a term once used to describe a variety of hard, dark-green volcanic rocks, and is said to show evidence of decoration along its sides. Artefacts like this are believed to date to the Early Bronze Age.
