Among the farm buildings constructed at Easter Muirdean was a row of four single-storeyed cottages which would once have been occupied by farm workers.

An estate plan of 1843 shows that each cottage consisted of a single room, which would have provided accommodation for the farm worker and his family.

Easter Muirdean farm was primarily dedicated to arable farming, which at this time would have been a labour-intensive activity. A farm worker such as a ploughman might be given a house for himself and members of his family who would also be expected to work on the farm as required.
