A perforated sandstone pebble, waterworn and forming an irregular circle in shape, was found in the vicinity of Smailholm during the nineteenth century. The object was said to measure approximately 75mm in diamater, and was flattish in appearance.

No information is known about the circumstances of this find, and even the exact location of its findspot remains a mystery. Without information like this available, it is impossible to suggest a date of origin for the object, and difficult, too, to establish what it might have been used for. Small perforated pebbles like this could be used as weights for a fishing net, but without further proof, such a suggestion must remain entirely conjectural.
