A Roman distance slab was found at Carleith (farm at NS 481 730) before 1699. Prior to its presentation to the University of Glasgow (Hunterian Museum) by James Hamilton of Barns, it was seen by Gordon and Horsley above the gate of Cochno House, near Duntocher.
The inscription reads: IMP.ANTON.AVG.PIO.P.P.LEG.II.AVG.FP.IIICCLXXI (3,271 Roman feet). It is richly decorated and measures 2ft 3ins by 1ft 8 1/2 ins. Macdonald suggests that the distance given places the location of the stone immediately E of the farmhouse (? area NS 482 729.
