(NS 4931 7279) Roman Distance Slab found (NAT)

OS 50" map (1970)

Macdonald states that this slab appears to have been added to the Glasgow University collection between 1826 and 1844. There is no record of its discovery, but its find spot appears of 1st edition 25" (1860) and the authority would seem to have been a Mr Wright of Duntocher (Name Book 1860) who indicated the exact location to OS officers. Macdonald argues that Stuart's (1852) doubts as to the locality of the find are unfounded, and that the slab inscription is entirely consistent with the OS siting.

The slab , which closely resembles that found at Carleith (NS47SE 14), measures 2 ft 3 1/2 ins by 1 ft 7 1/2 ins, and reads LEG.II.AVG. P IIIICXL (4140 paces). It is in the Hunterian Museum.
