An area to the north of Gatehouse of Fleet was examined and a total of 385 sites were recorded, 317 for the first time. This included several extensive pre-improvement field-systems as well as hut circles and prehistoric field-systems, a 2ha fort, and over 100 burnt mounds. The density and diversity of sites in this unafforested window underlies the importance of such areas in the surviving archaeology of Galloway.
