An archaeological assessment was undertaken by Scotia Archaeology Limited along the proposed new route of the A1 between Tranent and Haddington. A programme of fieldwalking, excavation and geophysical survey was carried out in 1994 and 1995.

In Area 1 (NT 375 713) a section of the road corridor passes close to the west side of St Clement's Wells, the site of a former industrial village. A long trench measuring 60m by 5m was opened along the edge of the road corridor, near the hamlet. Other than two modern field drains, nothing of archaeological interest was encountered.

547006	RECORDING	EXCAVATION	As part of an archaeological assessment undertaken by Scotia Archaeology Limited along the proposed new route of the A1 between Tranent and Haddington in 1994, an area was examined to establish whether a presumed pit alignment (NT57NW 53) continued into the road corridor. No evidence of this was found, however the excavation trench, measuring 80m by 7m did contain a group of archaeological features which may be interpreted as a late prehistoric open settlement 0.55m below present ground level. These included a curved wall slot with the impressions of posts in its base; four similar post holes arranged in a 2.0m square; and two linear slots. A flint waste flake was recovered from the curved slot. Extending the trench confirmed that no further remains were contained within the road corridor, suggesting that most of the settlement lies further up the hill to the north. This settlement may be associated with a known cropmarked enclosure (NT57NW 93). [...]	1994
546953	RECORDING	UNSPECIFIED GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY TECHNIQUE	A geophysical survey was undertaken at this location, on a gentle slope, to examine the area for evidence of pre-modern habitation as well as more recent activity associated with a former airfield to the west.
