Despite exceptionally poor weather conditions about 500 sites were re corded the great majority as crop-marks. New discoveries included a temporary Roman camp near Cupar, Fife (NO 357116), and a possible Dark Age settlement at Whitekirk, East Lothian (NT 607806), while further progress was made in the study of prehistoric landscapes at Leuchars, Fife, and in the Lunan Valley.
The catalogue of sites recorded in 1977 has now been prepared and should be available shortly. Prints of sites recorded in recent seasons may be inspected in the National Monuments Record of Scotland.
