NS 55599 76479 Mugdock west gauge is the original gauge basin of the 1855 scheme where the reservoir water level is measured. Mugdock east gauge (NS55634 76466) belongs to the Loch Katrine scheme and was added later, presumably to take water from the 1885 tunnel independently of Craigmaddie Reservoir. The gauge basin is designed to measure the force of flow and to act as a stilling basin prior to water passing into the measuring pond.
