HY 71100 37500 Excavation of an early Neolithic Orkney-Cromarty rectangular stalled cairn and an overlying Bronze Age cairn threatened by coastal erosion in Tresness, Sanday Orkney.

The excavation revealed the well-preserved remains of an early Neolithic rectangular stalled cairn.

Following the infilling of the chamber at some point in the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age the rectangular Neolithic tomb was re-modelled as an early Bronze Age round cairn with internal

and external retaining walls.

In the western side of compartment one it was clear that a small exploratory trench had been opened at some point in the recent past.
