The Citizens Bookshop was recorded by the Threatened Buildings Survey in December 2023 prior to the closure of the bookshop.

The building was built c.1800 and acquired by J & G Innes in 1927. John Innes had founded the St Andrews Citizen Newspaper and in 1879 bought the printing and publishing business of the Tullis family. In 1928 J & G Innes employed Frank Pride to remodel the building. Pride, who had worked for Thomas and Wilkie of Dundee, installed new shop fronts, signage, leaded windows and sculpture externally. Internally he completely refitted the shop which included display cabinets and carved panels. A number of the original features survive. The inspiration appears to have been Arts and Crafts and specifically Libertys of London.
