A dendrochronological assessment was undertaken by Coralie Mills at Doune Castle at the request of HES through the PIC call-off contract with CFA Archaeology Ltd. The focus of the assessment was the timber draw bar within the Gatehouse Tower entrance, thought to be an integral part of the Gatehouse Tower's primary construction identified as being late 14th century. The oak draw bar was found to have has sufficient rings, plus probable sapwood and possible waney-edge present; it has good dating potential and is regarded as a primary feature of the late medieval Gatehouse Tower.
