NS 55362 65922 Excavation of a single trench measuring 1.7 x 1.0m was undertaken on the eastern side of Govan Old (Canmore ID: 44077) to investigate the source of water ingress within the church. The trench was positioned within the Scheduled Area where the current graveyard wall meets the church wall. Part of the trench was within a known 19th-century burial lair, which pre-dates the current church constructed in 1888. The majority of the trench comprised a mixed backfill relating to either the burial lair itself or a service trench containing cast iron rainwater pipes that had also been excavated through the western brick wall of the burial lair. The edge of a possible coffin was encountered approximately 1.4m beneath the current ground surface. This was not excavated but preserved in situ. The work was undertaken on behalf of the Govan Heritage Trust on 11–12 August 2020.
