Watling Lodge NS 862 798 NS87NE 2

A motte, known locally as ‘Maiden Castle’, is said to have stood on the N side of the Antonine Wall ditch at this point. This earth-built mound, apparently measuring about 22m from W to E by 12mtransversely, is reported to have been reduced in height by approximately 2m when Watling Lodge house was built in 1894.
