Nothing is visible in what is now largely arable ground of the George Pit, which was opened in 1850 by its owner George W M Henderson. The survey for the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife 1856, Sheet 35) was undertaken in 1853 and depicts little more than an engine-house linked by way of a ‘Tram Road’ to the Perth and Dundee Railway (Dunfermline Branch) some 270m to the NNW. By 1896, when the 2nd edition of the map was published (Fife and Kinross Sheet XXXIV.SE), the pit-head had acquired further buildings and a very large spoil heap had accumulated. The pit closed before 1913, the date of survey for the 1920 edition of the map. By this time George had been linked to the Alice Pit (NT19SE 32.1) some 430m to the NE, and also the Fordell Railway (NT18SW 262) by which the coal was transported to St David’s Harbour (NT18SW 50).
