NS 55349 65872 A project was undertaken, March – April 2019, at Govan Old Parish Church) and Graveyard (SM10393; Canmore ID: 44077)) in connection with public realm improvements within the church yard and surrounding area. The project included an excavation focussing on volunteer participation and training, a probe survey within the graveyard, a watching brief during works between Govan Road and the entrance to the graveyard and a measured survey of the graveyard. The work included a series of workshops and training sessions for students and volunteers as well as frequent school engagement activities and pop up exhibitions.

The entire dual approach leading in to the church was hand excavated including several additional slots related to the instillation of new lighting. Although much of the excavated area had been heavily truncated by a number of modern service trenches, particularly within the western path, a series of former path surfaces were exposed as well as a number of stones relating to burial lairs situated along the edge of earlier, narrower paths. The probe survey within the graveyard revealed three medieval gravestones previously thought to have been lost during demolition of the adjacent Harland and Wolff yard in 1973 along with a number of buried post-medieval gravestones.
