RCAHMS Special Survey

The National Trust for Scotland commissioned RCAHMS to follow up the 1993 ALS survey of the estate with a Condition Survey of the monuments as part of the preparation of a management plan for the estate. A report on the condition of the monuments was passed to the NTS in December 1996.

The hut (NO 0037 8953, MAR93 629) was located in the deep heather to the S of the drystone huts and pens recorded by RCAHMS in 1993. It is set into the slope of the ground on the N, and measures 4.5m from E to W by 1.6m transversely within faced-rubble walls, 1m thick and up to 0.4m high, with an entrance in the S. 623462	RECORDING	FIELD VISIT	The stony footings of a subrectangular hut are situated in a patch of burnt-off heather some 50m to the E of a hut (MAR93 195). The hut lies to the E of the angle in the track and beside a fragmentary bank which may have formed an enclosure. [...]	9 October 1996
623948	RECORDING	FIELD VISIT	Re-examination of this site lead to the recognition that there is a long building, aligned roughly E-W, to the N of the track (NO 0255 8866), the S side of which has been truncated by the construction of the track. This unrecorded building, in combination with the previously recorded hut (MAR93 378) to the S of the track, forms the nucleus of what may be a farmstead, comprising two buildings at right angles to one-another. The head-dyke, which stops short of the long building on the N and overlies the smaller building on the S, post-dates the farmstead. The additional building has rounded corners and measures 10.5m in length by at least 4m in breadth over faced-rubble walls, 0.9m thick and about 0.35m high. [...]	10 October 1996
