This motte is situated on the edge of the river cliff 30m W of Meikleour House (NO13NE 4.00). It stands to a height of 5m on the SSE and 3.5m on the NE and its roughly-circular summit is 22m in diameter. A slight depression (7.7m across) on the summit indicates the former site of the circular dovecot that is noted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1867.

At the beginning of the 13th century, Meikleour was held by the earls of Strathearn, but in 1318 Robert I confirmed a charter granting it to Malcolm de Innerpeffray, and in 1363 David II confirmed its sale to John Mercer, whose descendants (down to the present Marquess of Lansdowne) continue to hold the estate.

Visited by RCAHMS (PC) June 1990.

Reg Reg Scot; OS 6-inch map, Perthshire, 1st ed, sheet 63 (1867).
