Glen Clova: in October 1998 ground reconnaissance was carried out in Glen Clova in advance of field survey planned for spring 1999. The aerial reconnaissance programme of RCAHMS, and recent fieldwork by Headland Archaeology Ltd in Glen Prosen, had suggested that archaeological survival in the Angus Glens was much greater than existing records implied, and this was confirmed in Glen Clova. Apart from the ruined Clova Castle no archaeological sites had previously been recorded in the glen, but initial walking, so far concentrated on the lower slopes of the glen, has revealed a wealth of previously undiscovered sites, including a stone circle, five burial-cairns, over 50 hut-circles, three possible Pitcarmick-type houses, and about 350 ruined buildings of post-medieval date.
