Sculptured Stone at Lindores Village.

This stone, sculptured with incised symbols on one face, is built into a dry rubble dike at the west end of the garden of the first cottage in Lindores village, on the north side of the public road from Newburgh. Formerly it stood on the crest of the adjoining ridge, known as the Kaim Hill, but it was removed to its present position when the ridge was brought under cultivation. It is a nearly rectangular block, rounded at the top, and measures 4 feet in height by 1 foot 10 inches in breadth. On the upper part of the face, and occupying almost the entire width of the stone, the triple disc and cross-bar symbol is very distinct, the large central disc measuring 12 ½ inches and the two smaller discs 3 ½ inches in diameter. The central disc has been converted into a sundial, the details of which are shown in lighter incisions. A marginal band, 1 ½ inches in breadth, running across the face of the stone, bears indistinct lettering, probably representing Roman numerals associated with the sundial. Below this marginal band the stone is further carved with a representation of the crescent and V-shaped rod symbol, intersected here and there by other curved and ornamental incised lines, but the centre of the design is defaced by an O.S. bench-mark.

RCAHMS 1933, visited 28 May 1925.
