The western section of the Forth and Clyde Canal in Dunbartonshire was built between 1787 and 1790 (engineer Robert Whitworth), its western extremity being the two basins at Bowling (dated 1848 and the 1880s).

Bascule Bridges were utilised in a number of locations on the Forth and Clyde Canal, including Port Dundas in Glasgow, Ferrydyke and Dalmuir West. The example at Bowling was recorded in July 1980 (see MS/500/17/33). Note that the bridge appears to have been converted from manual to hydraulic power, probably at the same time as the construction of the neighbouring railway swing bridge.
