338. Cruck-framed Byre, Bonawe.

This building stands directly behind the E end of the row of workers' dwellings described on p. 291, and was formerly utilized as a byre and storehouse. It is constructed of local rubble masonry laid in mud mortar and is roughly oblong on plan, measuring about 7.3 m from N to S by 4.6 m transversely over walls some 0·6 m in thickness(Fig. 225). The building contains two pairs of crucks, with additional blades at the centre of each end-wall to receive a hipped roof. The crucks are scarf-jointed and pegged at wall-head level, but the upper portions of the blades were evidently sawn off when the existing covering of corrugated iron was substituted for the original thatch. The building is probably of 18th- or early 19th century date.
