Some 90 detailed site descriptions from this publication were entered into Canmore in 2017. The book was a collaboration between the author Geoffrey Stell (RCAHMS), the series editor Dr Anna Ritchie, and RCAHMS staff, and aimed to provide a thorough introduction to a wide range of monuments (dating from prehistoric to recent times) in a region of Scotland.

1017448	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	This precious gem of medieval architectural and social history stands close to the confluence of the Cluden Water and the River Nith. There are two distinct elements: the choir, south transept and fragment of the nave of an elegant collegiate church, and, extending northwards from the church sacristy, a rubble-built domestic and service range. On the east, the layout includes a restored formal knot garden and, immediately to the south, a tree-shrouded and terraced motte, which has obviously been part of the horticultural scheme. [...]	1986
1017452	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	This neat little building, first restored and partly rebuilt in 1898, stands close to a rocky inlet on the seaward side of the 'Isle' of Whit horn, once a genuine island but now a promontory linked to the mainland by Harbour Row and its associated quay. It is conceivable that it occupies a site associated with St Ninian, but no Early Christian remains have been recorded from the island. Excavations located the foundations of a narrower chancel, probably of 12th century date, but nothing older. As it stands, the chapel and its enclosure-wall date from about 1300 when it was rebuilt as a single structural chamber with a south doorway, a two-light east window, and smaller windows in the side-walls. Much of the dressed stonework is modern. In 1864 it was reported that 'a certain retired sea-captain ... took out the dressed stones some years ago to help up his house in the village'. A pre-restoration sketch of 1887 shows that the embrasure of the despoiled east window was of distinctly pointed form. [...]	1986
1017458	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	Next to Ruthwell, this is the most complete Anglian sculptured cross in the region. Standing to an overall height of 2.7m, it remains intact except for the top and side-arms of the cross-head and may occupy its original position. The cross-head had double concave 'arm-pits' with a flat central rosette. The faces are made up of zoomorphic-carved panels, including paired and winged beasts, while the narrow sides bear continuous variegated plait decoration. [...]	1986
