Glaister Farm burnt mounds; sites 24/101, 24/102, 24/103
These sites were grouped together within 100m of each other, near the same stream, at NR 928 349, NR 927 350 and NR 928 349 respectively. Site 101 was simply a spread of burnt mound material approximately 0.30-0.40m deep, revealed by a Forestry Commission plough furrow. Site 102 was noted 100m uphill of the other two sites, but was not investigated as it had been colonised by rabbits and severely damaged. Site 103 had been neatly sectioned by a stream, revealing in section the trough with a stepped profile, measuring 2.2m in length and with a depth of 0.65m. The stepped profile may indicate that the trough had been re-cut and re-orientated. The mound behind was at least 0.70m in height, but was difficult to determine accurately because, as with many of the other sites it appeared to have been located on a small natural knoll. It was also observed in the field that the stream appeared to have been diverted in order to feed the trough directly.
