NS 2530 8040 (centred on) A measured buildings survey was carried out in 2017 on the site of a WW1 army camp which served the Portkil Battery in the same area. Details of various concrete foundations and a single brick building have been recorded. The survey has been compared with extant WD plans (or rather sketch plan) of the site which survive at Kew Records Office. The new survey shows that the WD plans are partially inaccurate regarding some buildings which survive on the site; however, the WD drawing does indicate function for some of the buildings such as ‘cookhouse’, ‘latrines’ ‘oil store’ etc. Small scale excavations are planned

at various locations on the outer defences of Portkil Battery site, including ‘blockhouses’ and ‘trenches’.

Report: NRHE and WoSAS (intended) and on www.spanglefish.
