Construction started in 1862 of the Albert Harbour, which replaced the earlier Albert Quay (see NS27NE 427). The harbour was roughly rectangular on plan, measuring 304m from NW to SE by 104m transversely, with a 40m wide entrance in the middle of its NE side. A number of transit sheds were built on the NE, SE and NW sides of the harbour, all served by a railway or tramway. The harbour was never completed to the scheme originally intended by the Harbour Trust. It was filled in the late 1960s for the creation of the container port. All that is now visible of the harbour is some of its riverside masonry and its now largely blocked off entrance.
