The number of Free Churches in the district is testimony to popular dissatisfaction with landowners’ exercise of their rights to appoint ministers. Immediately after the Disruption a Free Church was built in King’s Road in 1844. Another was built at the same date at the Isle, on a site provided by Whithorn town council, in the harbour on land reclaimed below the high tide mark and so beyond the jurisdiction of the landowner (fig 30).

Information from ‘The Scottish Burgh Survey, Historic Whithorn: Archaeology and Development’ (2010).
