The first iron foundry was the Kirkintilloch Foundry, more commonly known as the Old Foundry. This was established in the 1830s, just south of the canal aqueduct over the Luggie (fig 29.25). Initially it specialised in railway castings and later in heavy engineering castings. It continued until the end of the nineteenth century, when the buildings were taken over by F McNeill & Co for the manufacture of roof felting.
