A town house, known as Mar's Castle and thought to have been constructed in 1594, stood at the top of Gallowgate and bore many similarities to its contemporary, Provost Ross' House (see area 11). It is believed to have been the residence of the Earls of Mar during the seventeenth century. It was demolished for road widening in 1897.

Information from ‘Historic Aberdeen: The Archaeological Implications of Development’ (1997).
