The first mention of a tolbooth in Lanark occurs in council records in 1488 when there is a note of its repair (Renwick, 1898, i). Extensive alterations were carried out on the structure, which was located at the High Street end of Wellgate, including the construction of eight vaults of stone (Renwick, 1893, 64). The next reconstruction took place in 1714 and a third one followed in 1779.
