The second cotton mill established in Scotland was built about 1779, a four-storey structure measuring 100 feet (30.48m) by thirty feet (9.14m) (Sharpe, 1908-9, 13). The mill suffered fire damage in 1955 and was dismantled in 1959. A petrol station now occupies the site.
